VAROSHA
-a project with the catalán poet Mireia Calafell
The colaboration with Mireia Calafell began in 2018 with a recital improvising on the cello music to accompany her beautiful and intense poetry. These experiments continued and resulted in our project "Varosha" where poetry and acoustic and electronic music are entwined in a recital-performance.
Together, we propose a journey that bears the name of what was one of the busiest tourist destinations in the Mediterranean at the end of the 1960s and which, with the Turkish invasion of 1974, was left uninhabited. Since then, it is a ghost town. Today it represents the logic of a way of understanding the world as a place that can be devoured –with tourism, with war– and, at the same time, the mystery and contradictory beauty of a space that, due to the fact that it can be inhabited again, allows us to think of a new way of doing, of being, of telling ourselves. A finals dels 60, Varosha era un dels destins turístics més concorreguts de la mediterrània, però amb la invasió turca del 74 va quedar deshabitada. Des de llavors, és una ciutat fantasma. Representa avui la lògica pròpia d’una manera d’entendre el món com a lloc que pot ser devorat –amb el turisme, amb una guerra– i, al mateix temps, el misteri i la bellesa contradictòria d’un espai que, pel fet de poder ser habitat altra vegada, permet pensar una nova manera de fer, de ser, de dir-nos.
